Starting today, March 3, Pune Metro has rolled out a new rule that changes how passengers pass through ticket gates at all stations. Under the updated system, commuters must scan their ticket, metro card, or travel pass before the gates open.

The move, officials say, is aimed at curbing ticketless travel and improving crowd management. Previously, gates remained open by default and would close only if someone tried to enter or exit without a valid ticket. The new procedure is expected to make entry and exit points more organised and efficient.

Sharing the update on X (formerly Twitter), Pune Metro said, “Pune Metro has introduced a major change in the ticket-checking (AFC) gates at its stations for the convenience of passengers. Now, while entering or exiting the Metro station, the gates will remain closed by default and will open only after you scan your ticket. This change will be implemented from tomorrow, Tuesday, 03/03/2026."

Under the new system, Pune Metro AFC gates will stay closed by default and open only after passengers scan a valid QR ticket, metro card, or WhatsApp pass.

Pune Metro further explained, “Until now, the Metro’s Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates used to remain open. After scanning the ticket, a green light would appear and passengers could enter, while the flap gates would close only if there was no ticket or if the ticket was invalid. However, going forward, the AFC gates at Pune Metro stations will always remain closed. The doors will open only when passengers scan their ticket or card on the machine, allowing them to enter or exit."
