Pune, 21 March 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s City Improvement Committee has approved a major proposal to extend the Swargate–Katraj Metro corridor up to Shivapur Toll Plaza and further connect it with the proposed Ring Road. The proposal has now been forwarded to the general body for final approval.
The Katraj Ghat route is a crucial link connecting Pune to Satara, Kolhapur, and other parts of South Maharashtra. With increasing vehicular traffic, congestion in areas like Katraj and Shivapur Toll Plaza has become a serious concern. The metro extension is expected to provide a long-term solution to this growing issue.
The proposal was presented by corporators Varsha Tapkir and Tejashree Badak, highlighting the need for efficient public transport in rapidly developing areas of South Pune.
If implemented, the extended metro line will offer faster, safer, and more affordable travel, reducing dependence on private vehicles and helping curb pollution.
Rapid urban growth around Katraj, Shivapur Toll Plaza, and along the proposed Ring Road has further increased pressure on the existing transport infrastructure. The metro expansion is seen as essential to support this development and improve daily commuting.
Committee Chairperson Smita Vaste stated that integrating the metro with the Ring Road will help balance traffic distribution across the city and support better urban planning.
The project is expected to significantly benefit residents in southern Pune and emerging suburban areas, while strengthening the city’s overall transport network.
