Weather: Pune Shivers Under Prolonged Cold Spell; Airport Drills for Fog Disruptions

City records seven consecutive days of single-digit temperatures for the first time since 2015; Pune Airport conducts mock drill to handle fog-related flight disruptions.

Pune, 15 December 2025: City is experiencing an unusually prolonged cold spell this winter, with minimum temperatures remaining in single digits for seven consecutive days, witnessed after a decade. Such an extended stretch of cold nights was last recorded in 2015, making the current winter particularly significant in the city’s recent weather history.

Over the past week, the city’s minimum temperatures have consistently hovered between 8°C and 9°C, pointing to a sustained cold phase rather than brief temperature dips. December 11 marked the coldest night of the season so far, with the mercury dropping to 7.9°C, underlining the intensity of prevailing winter conditions.

Meteorologists have indicated that the cold spell is likely to continue, with forecasts suggesting single-digit minimum temperatures at least until December 19. If the trend persists, Pune could register one of its highest counts of single-digit temperature days in a single winter season. Experts attribute the prolonged chill to favourable atmospheric conditions that have allowed cold air to move southwards and settle over the region.

Airport Mock Drill

Amid the intensified winter conditions and the possibility of fog-related disruptions, Pune Airport authorities conducted a comprehensive fog and low-visibility management mock drill. The exercise was aimed at strengthening operational preparedness during the fog-prone season, especially in light of the recent sharp drop in temperatures.

The drill focused on ensuring coordinated and timely responses to potential flight delays, diversions, and cancellations caused by adverse weather. Airport officials tested systems related to real-time information sharing, passenger communication, inter-agency coordination, and overall passenger facilitation.

Special attention was given to assisting persons with reduced mobility, managing delays, maintaining cleanliness, ensuring food and seating availability, and strictly following DGCA-mandated passenger care norms.
