Pune, 23rd June 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to remove the remaining Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors in the city, bringing an end to a project once aimed at improving public transport and traffic flow. The decision was approved during the PMC General Body meeting on Monday.
The proposal initially focused on removing the BRT corridor between Vishrantwadi Chowk and Phulenagar on Alandi Road. However, during discussions, both ruling and opposition members agreed to extend the decision to include BRT stretches on Nagar Road and the Swargate-Katraj route. Civic officials have been directed to begin work immediately and complete it within eight days.
PMC officials said the removal of the BRT corridor on Alandi Road would help ease congestion and allow the creation of two additional lanes for private vehicles. The administration had submitted a favourable report supporting the move, highlighting improved traffic flow as a key benefit.
The BRT system was introduced in Pune on major roads such as Satara Road, Nagar Road, Hadapsar Road, and Alandi Road. Over time, several sections were modified or removed due to operational challenges and evolving traffic needs.
A significant portion of the corridor on Solapur Road has already been dismantled, while nearly half of the BRT lane on Nagar Road had been removed earlier.
During the meeting, some members suggested seeking the opinion of the PMPML board before finalising the decision. However, civic leaders argued that this would delay the process and expressed confidence that PMPML would support the move.
They also noted that Metro construction has already impacted the Swargate-Katraj BRT corridor, making its removal necessary.
Leader of the House Ganesh Bidkar said, "The General Body has approved the removal of BRT lanes on Alandi Road, Nagar Road, and the Swargate-Katraj stretch. The roads will be widened before the Ashadhi Wari."
Mayor Manjusha Nagpure stated, "The BRT corridor on Alandi Road creates obstacles during the annual pilgrimage. We have directed the administration to remove it within eight days to ensure smoother movement of devotees and vehicles."
