Pune has been selected to host the 2032 Road Cycling World Championships, the UCI announced on Wednesday, marking the event’s debut in India.

Pune has previously organised the Pune Grand Tour in January 2026, a four-stage race covering 437 kilometres that drew about 170 cyclists from 35 countries, including 12 Indian riders.

The race, claimed by New Zealander Luke Mudgway, marked India’s first-ever multi-stage road cycling event, classified as a UCI 2.2 international race, and represented a major milestone for the sport in the country.

Pune was competing to host the world championships against Groningen and the Drenthe region in the Netherlands, but the 2034 edition of the event was ultimately awarded to them.

For the first time, we will be in India, the country that now has the world’s largest population. We recognize how strong cycling has become in Pune, President David Lappartient said in a speech at the UCI Congress in Montreal.

As we received two excellent bids, the UCI Management Committee decided to award road world championships to both, rather than just one.
