Pune, 6th January 2026: At least 33 people were bitten by a suspected rabid stray dog in the Chakan area of Pune district on Sunday morning, causing panic among residents. The victims included four children, seven women, 22 men, and several senior citizens.
The attacks took place between 9 am and 11 am at multiple locations, including Ambedkar Chowk, Mahatma Phule Chowk and the Market Yard area. According to civic officials, the dog attacked people walking on the streets without any provocation and bit several individuals in quick succession.
All injured persons were rushed to Chakan Rural Hospital, where they were immediately administered anti-rabies vaccines and preventive treatment. Medical officer Dr. Sachin Kambale said all victims were stable and confirmed that vaccination was given without delay as the dog showed symptoms consistent with rabies.
Some victims who suffered deep bite wounds were later referred to healthcare facilities in Pimpri Chinchwad for advanced treatment. The stray dog reportedly died a few hours after the incident, and veterinary officials have sent samples for laboratory tests to confirm rabies.
Residents said the sudden attacks created fear in the area, forcing people to shut shops and stay indoors. Civic authorities stated that the Chakan Municipal Council has started a drive to identify and monitor stray dogs and has appealed to citizens to report aggressive animals immediately and seek prompt medical care in case of bites.
The incident has once again raised questions about stray dog management and public safety in Chakan, a rapidly growing industrial town.
