Pune, 3rd June 2026: Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) working president and MP Supriya Sule on Tuesday questioned Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar’s claim that crime in the city has reduced, saying that the ground reality and official government data suggest otherwise.

Sule was responding to a letter sent by the Police Commissioner after she had earlier demanded that he be sent on compulsory leave over concerns about rising crime in Pune. She said, “If the police truly believe that crime is under control, this letter should have been sent to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis instead of me.”

Speaking to reporters at Congress Bhavan, Sule said, “There are major differences between the crime figures released by the Central Government, the Maharashtra Government, and Pune Police. This raises questions about what the actual crime situation in the city is.”

She further stated, “The Maharashtra Government’s own data shows that crime is increasing in Pune, while the police administration continues to claim that criminal activity is declining.” Referring to recent incidents, she pointed to the Fergusson College Road drug case, toxic liquor cases, and the continued presence of organized crime in the city.

Questioning the effectiveness of law enforcement, Sule said, “It is surprising that journalists are able to uncover information about illegal liquor operations while the police fail to detect them.”

She added, “Simply transferring officials will not solve the problem. There is a need for direct and strict action against drug mafias, illegal businesses, and organized criminal networks operating in Pune.”
