SA vs NZ Semi Final: Proteas look to ward off the pressure of history, as Kiwis push with the 'underdog' force

Read the pitch report, probable match ups & playing XIs, and what the captains had to say on the eve of the first semi-final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, 2026.

The first semifinal of the 2026 T20 World Cup pits the tournament’s only undefeated side, South Africa, against the ever resilient New Zealand at the iconic Eden Gardens tonight. While the Proteas enter as firm favorites following a run that includes the 2025 World Test Championship title, the Black Caps are looking to shed their "underdog" tag and reach their second T20 World Cup final.

Markram rejects the "Law of Averages"

Despite the immense pressure of a knockout game and the potential "law of averages" looming over an unbeaten streak, South Africa captain Aiden Markram remains composed. Speaking in Kolkata, Markram emphasized that the team will not be reinventing the wheel for the semifinal.

We’re not trying to do anything different tomorrow. Keep hammering away at the things that we’ve done well and that have got us here. It’s about trust in the plans.
Aiden Markram, South Africa captain

South Africa’s confidence is bolstered by their group-stage victory over New Zealand in Ahmedabad, where a Marco Jansen four-wicket haul and an 86 from Markram saw them cruise to a seven-wicket win. However, Markram warned that a semifinal "adds a new wrinkle" and won't be as straightforward.

Santner’s "one-off" mentality

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner is leaning into the underdog narrative. The Black Caps reached the last four by the thinnest of margins, pipping Pakistan on net run rate, but Santner believes that in a knockout, momentum resets to zero.

We back ourselves in one-off games against most teams. South Africa look like a very good outfit... but it’s one game and you are into the final. Whoever really turns up is going to get through.
Mitchell Santner, New Zealand Captain

While South Africa boasts a "better-grooved" pace core in Jansen, Rabada, and tournament leading-wicket taker Lungi Ngidi, New Zealand holds the edge in spin variety. The Kiwis can call upon Santner, Ravindra, Phillips, and Sodhi, though the flatter Eden Gardens deck may force them to rely more on their returning quick, Matt Henry.

Match-ups to watch

  1. Aiden Markram vs. Mitchell Santner: Markram has been the tournament's standout opener (268 runs at 175 SR). Santner’s ability to put brakes on him during the Powerplay will be New Zealand’s primary defensive goal.

  2. Quinton de Kock vs. Matt Henry: Henry’s inswinger has been lethal this season. He will look to exploit any early-innings nerves from the explosive Proteas wicketkeeper.

  3. Rachin Ravindra’s big-game pedigree: Ravindra scored a century the last time these two met in an ICC semifinal (2025 Champions Trophy). Though his bat has been quiet lately, he remains the Kiwis' "X-factor."

Pitch and conditions: Eden Gardens

The surface at Eden Gardens appears darker than usual, suggesting it might offer some assistance to the spinners, even though it continues to be favorable for batsmen. With a night game on the cards, dew is expected to play a significant role, potentially making the ball skip onto the bat faster under lights and making it harder for bowlers to grip in the second innings.
