Apple has rolled out the first developer beta of iOS 26.5, introducing new emojis, enhanced keyboard accuracy, and subtle clues about upcoming features. While speculation had suggested significant AI upgrades for Siri might arrive with this release, it appears the company is holding back its AI enhancements for iOS 27, set to debut at WWDC 2026 in June.
Apple’s iOS 26.5 beta 1 packs a mix of subtle tweaks, security upgrades, and hints at future features, giving users a glimpse of what’s coming while keeping the big AI updates for iOS 27.
Apple Maps Ads: The first clue that ads are coming to Apple Maps has arrived. The update introduces a “Suggested Places” section, which recommends nearby spots based on trends and recent searches. Once Apple rolls out its ad system, businesses will be able to appear here and in search results, according to MacRumors.
RCS End-to-End Encryption: Cross-platform messaging is now more secure. End-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS between iPhone and Android users has returned after a brief removal in iOS 26.4. With the setting now enabled by default, messages are fully shielded from access by third parties.
Third-Party Wearables: In compliance with the EU Digital Markets Act, Apple is expanding support for non-Apple accessories. Soon, third-party earbuds can pair seamlessly with a single tap, while smartwatches will receive notifications and sync Live Activities. Note: enabling notifications on a third-party watch will temporarily disable alerts on an Apple Watch.
Additional upgrades include a redesigned Apple-to-Android data transfer menu that allows users to selectively move message attachments. Magic Accessories, such as the Magic Keyboard, now connect automatically via USB-C, and a new Inuktitut keyboard layout is also available.
