Sony’s PlayStation Plus Hike Means Playing GTA 6 Online Could Cost More

Sony has increased PlayStation Plus subscription prices ahead of GTA 6’s launch, sparking criticism from gamers who believe the company is capitalising on the expected surge in online players.

Sony has officially increased prices for its PlayStation Plus subscription service, fuelling speculation among gamers that the company is positioning itself to benefit from the massive influx of GTA 6 players expected later this year. With less than six months remaining until the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 on Nov. 19, PlayStation users could soon be paying more to jump online.

Because playing GTA Online on PlayStation requires an active PS Plus subscription, many fans suspect that the timing of the price increase is anything but coincidental.

While Sony cited “market conditions” for the price hike, critics have questioned the timing amid growing GTA 6 hype. Since GTA Online on PlayStation requires an active PS Plus membership, fans may have to spend more to access online gameplay when the title launches later this year.

Beyond online multiplayer access, PlayStation Plus also offers monthly free games and exclusive PlayStation Store discounts.

Starting May 20, Sony will increase PlayStation Plus subscription prices for new users across select regions, including the U.S., Europe, and the U.K. The company says the revision is due to changing “market conditions,”

  • Monthly PlayStation Plus plans will now start at $10.99 in the U.S., EUR 9.99 in Europe, and GBP 7.99 in the U.K.

  • Three-month plans have increased to $27.99, EUR 27.99, and GBP 21.99 respectively.

  • The changes reflect a $1 hike for monthly subscriptions and a $3 increase for quarterly plans.

  • Existing subscribers will largely remain unaffected unless their plan expires or is modified, except in India and Turkey where revised pricing applies sooner.

Critics argue online multiplayer access should not require a paid subscription, especially as gaming costs continue to rise. Some users have questioned Sony’s “market conditions” explanation, pointing out that Microsoft recently reduced Xbox Game Pass pricing in select markets. Others believe the timing aligns with GTA 6’s expected launch-driven boost in PlayStation Plus subscriptions.
