What to do if harassed for dowry in India: The death of a young married woman from Pune, Vaishnavi Hagavane, has created a stir in the entire Maharashtra. Vaishnavi Hagavane was the daughter-in-law of Rajendra Hagavane, former NCP president of Mulshi taluka and close to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

She had only completed two years of marriage. It is being reported that she is being harassed for dowry. In such a situation, the question arises that what to do if there is harassment for dowry and where to complain? Let us know in detail.

Dowry Prevention Act

The Dowry Prohibition Act came into force in 1961. According to this act, it is a crime to accept direct or indirect gift of goods or property from one party to the other party in marriage. Exchange of money, jewelry, land, gold is a crime. Dowry Prohibition Officers have been appointed in every police station and district and taluka level committees have been established under this act. November 26 has been declared Dowry Prohibition Day in Maharashtra.

Punishment

The Dowry Prohibition Act provides for imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years and a fine not exceeding Rs. 15,000 or the value of the dowry, whichever is higher.

If any person directly or indirectly demands dowry, the punishment can be a minimum of 6 months and up to 2 years. There is also a provision for imprisonment for a term and a fine of up to Rs.10,000.

If a woman is physically or mentally tortured by her in-laws for dowry and is forced to commit suicide, she is punished under Section 498A.
