Pune: The rising summer temperatures have led to a sharp increase in air cooler sales across Pune. With temperatures touching 40°C in early March, residents are looking for cost-effective cooling solutions, and air coolers have emerged as the top choice due to their affordability and energy efficiency.
Growing Demand for Coolers
The market is witnessing a surge in demand for coolers, which are available in various models and price ranges. Small window coolers are priced between ₹2,500 and ₹7,000, while desert coolers, suitable for larger rooms, cost between ₹6,000 and ₹12,000. Compared to last year, prices have increased by ₹500 to ₹1,000.
Most coolers in the market are made of either fiber or metal sheets, and manufacturers provide warranties of six months to a year for the motors. However, vendors warn that using a cooler without water may cause the motor to burn out. A well-maintained cooler can last five to seven years.
Why Are Customers Choosing Air Coolers?
For many, purchasing an air conditioner (AC) is not financially viable. Coolers are a budget-friendly alternative, consuming less electricity compared to ACs. This has made them a popular choice among middle-class families and students who live in Pune temporarily for education or work.
A Pune resident, Vaibhav Jagdale from Karvenagar, shared his experience:
"The local-brand cooler I bought last year worked perfectly. So, this year, I bought the same type again. A cooler in the ₹2,000–₹3,000 range works well for two to three months and doesn't require much maintenance."
Sellers Witnessing a Boom in Sales
Local vendors confirm that customer response has been excellent this season. Govind Kapoor Bharti, a cooler seller, said, "Due to the extreme heat, many people are purchasing coolers. We are helping them choose the best one according to their needs at reasonable prices."
Tips for Effective Cooler Use
To maximize the efficiency and lifespan of an air cooler, follow these simple tips:
Place it in a well-ventilated area for better cooling.
Regularly clean the water tank to avoid dirt buildup.
Keep the room ventilated while the cooler is running.
Store the cooler in a dry place when not in use to prevent damage.
