Guillain-Barre Syndrome Outbreak: Pune Sees 9 New Cases, 5 Recover

Medical officials confirmed that four more patients are showing significant improvement and are likely to be discharged soon.

Pune: The Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) outbreak in Pune continues to spread, with nine new cases detected on Saturday (February 1), raising the total case count to 149.

Despite the rise in cases, five patients who had been receiving treatment at Sassoon Hospital have recovered and were discharged. Hospital officials also confirmed that four more patients are showing significant improvement and are likely to be discharged soon.

Breakdown of Affected Patients

Out of 149 GBS cases reported in the state, 124 have been confirmed through medical diagnosis. The geographical distribution of cases is as follows:

  • 29 cases from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits

  • 82 cases from included villages surrounding Pune

  • 17 cases from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC)

  • 13 cases from Pune rural areas

  • 8 cases from other districts

Critical Cases and Age Group Analysis

A total of 28 patients are currently on ventilator support, indicating the severity of the condition in some cases. The 20 to 29 age group has the highest number of affected individuals, with 34 cases reported.

Precautionary Guidelines

  • Drinking only boiled and cooled water

  • Maintaining food hygiene by consuming only fresh and properly cooked meals

  • Following strict personal hygiene practices

  • Avoiding the consumption of stale or undercooked food, especially meat and seafood

  • Ensuring that water sources are clean and free from contamination

The distribution of GBS cases across different age groups is as follows:

  • 0 to 9 years: 22 cases

  • 10 to 19 years: 21 cases

  • 20 to 29 years: 34 cases (highest affected group)

  • 30 to 39 years: 16 cases

  • 40 to 49 years: 14 cases

  • 50 to 59 years: 25 cases

  • 60 to 69 years: 14 cases

  • 70 to 79 years: 1 case

  • 80 to 89 years: 2 cases
