Pune: In a significant move towards sustainable energy, 303 government schools in rural Pune district are set to be equipped with solar power systems. The initiative, led by the Agricultural Development Department of the Pune Zilla Parishad, aims to address power shortages and reduce electricity costs in schools.
Taluka-level agricultural and extension officers have been instructed to survey the selected schools and submit reports on infrastructure feasibility. Once completed, the installation of solar panels will begin, ensuring uninterrupted power supply and reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources.
Addressing the Challenge of Unpaid Electricity Bills
Many government primary schools across the district have faced power disruptions due to unpaid electricity bills. As a long-term solution, the solar energy project is expected to significantly cut operational costs and provide sustainable electricity for essential facilities such as classroom lighting, fans, computer labs, and CCTV systems.
Following the identification of 303 schools, concerned officers have been directed to conduct detailed site inspections. The findings will determine the timeline for the next phase of solar panel deployment. Education officials and school administrators have welcomed the initiative, citing its potential to improve the overall learning environment for students.
