Pune: In a significant improvement for Pune’s traffic conditions, the Pune City Police traffic department has reported a 53% reduction in traffic congestion, along with a 10.44% increase in vehicle speed. The positive development follows an extensive traffic congestion study and implementation of strategic reforms.

The announcement comes just two months after a global report ranked Pune as the third most traffic-congested city in the world. However, Pune police, in a recent press conference, shared encouraging updates, attributing the improvement to data-driven traffic management measures.

Pune police adopted Adaptive Traffic Management System (ATMS), Google Maps analytics, citizen complaints, and social media feedback to analyze congestion patterns.

Based on these findings, several reforms were introduced, including:

  • Training programs for traffic officers and staff

  • Modifications to traffic signal systems

  • Implementation of off-street parking solutions

Authorities have also intensified enforcement efforts against traffic violators. According to Additional Police Commissioner Manoj Patil, the number of violations recorded has increased fivefold compared to the same period last year, while penalties have doubled under a special enforcement drive.

With these measures, Pune police aim to significantly reduce commuter stress and improve road conditions. The department has encouraged citizens to share their feedback on traffic congestion and potential improvements at muktapeeth@esakal.com.
