Pune: In a significant step to enhance road safety, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has mandated all two-wheeler distributors to provide two helmets with every new two-wheeler sold. This directive, issued through an official circular, aims to reduce fatalities caused by two-wheeler accidents.
The RTO highlighted that road accidents involving two-wheelers account for a substantial number of deaths in Maharashtra and across India. “If riders and pillion passengers consistently use helmets, the number of fatalities in accidents can be significantly reduced,” the circular emphasized.
To comply with Rule 138 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, two-wheeler distributors are now required to supply two helmets to customers at the time of purchase. The RTO has appealed to citizens to ensure compliance by collecting the helmets from distributors.
Experts advise opting for branded helmets to ensure better protection. Non-branded helmets, often priced below ₹500, do not meet safety standards and are considered unsafe. Helmets must carry the ISI mark, indicating compliance with quality and safety standards.
Helmet components, especially visors, need regular inspection. Over time, visors may crack or degrade, reducing visibility and increasing accident risks. Branded helmets offer replaceable visors that can be purchased separately.
Helmet size and fit are crucial for safety. Buyers should select helmets slightly larger than their head circumference for a snug fit. While carbon fiber helmets are the lightest and strongest, their high cost (₹13,000–₹15,000) may deter buyers. However, helmets from reliable brands at affordable prices are readily available.
