Pune, 3rd July 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall for Pune city over the next six days, while isolated parts of the ghat regions are likely to receive heavy to very heavy showers, especially through July 6. Throughout this period, the city is expected to witness generally cloudy skies.

In response to the continued rainfall in the catchment areas, the irrigation department on Wednesday increased the water discharge from the Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River basin. The discharge was raised from 6,451 cusecs to 8,522 cusecs.

This decision was taken around 10:00 am, taking into account the inflow into the reservoir and the overall water levels. Officials said that the release may be further adjusted depending on rainfall intensity and reservoir conditions in the coming days.

Speaking about the situation, Mohan Bhadane, Sub-Divisional Engineer at the Mutha Canal Irrigation Sub-Division in Swargate, said, “The discharge from the Khadakwasla Dam has been increased to 8,522 cusecs. Citizens are requested to remain cautious, especially those residing along the riverbanks. The discharge may be reduced or increased again based on rainfall and seasonal factors.”

The IMD has urged citizens to be cautious while traveling in hilly areas, including regions like Lavasa, Tamhini, and Lonavala, due to the possibility of localised flooding, waterlogging, and reduced visibility. Light to moderate rain is expected across Pune city, with a higher likelihood of intense rainfall in higher elevation areas during the weekend.

Authorities have also asked residents living near the Mutha River to stay alert and avoid venturing close to the riverbanks, particularly during hours of peak discharge. The situation is being closely monitored by the administration, which will issue further advisories if needed.

The Khadakwasla Dam is one of the major water sources for Pune and its surrounding regions, and the controlled release of water is crucial for managing flood risks during the ongoing monsoon season.
