Pune, 2nd July 2026: Maharashtra is set to witness an intense spell of monsoon rainfall over the next four days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rain across several parts of the state.
The weather department has issued a Red Alert for Palghar on Wednesday, while the ghat areas of Pune district and Raigad will remain under a Red Alert from July 2 to July 4. The IMD has clarified that the Red Alert for Pune applies only to the district's ghat regions and not to Pune city.
The forecast indicates that Konkan, the Western Ghats, Western Maharashtra, parts of Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha are likely to receive widespread rainfall, with isolated places expected to experience very heavy to extremely heavy showers.
Several other districts have been placed under an Orange Alert as rainfall activity is expected to remain vigorous across the state.
IMD scientist S.D. Sanap said that the current weather conditions have developed due to strengthening monsoon winds and the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
He said these systems have enhanced moisture inflow over Maharashtra, leading to widespread rainfall, particularly over the Konkan coast and the ghat regions, where very heavy rainfall is likely over the coming days.
Rainfall recorded during the last 24 hours highlights the intensity of the ongoing spell. In Raigad district, Bhira received more than 200 mm of rain. In Pune district's ghat region, Tamhini recorded 135 mm, Dongarwadi 114 mm, Lonavala 95 mm and Mulshi 32 mm.
These figures indicate that rainfall has been concentrated along the Western Ghats, with more heavy showers expected in the coming days.
The IMD has advised people living in low-lying, landslide-prone and ghat areas to remain cautious as the heavy rainfall is likely to continue through the weekend.
Travellers have also been urged to monitor weather updates before heading to hill stations and ghat sections, while local authorities have been asked to stay prepared for rain-related incidents.
