Pune, 2nd June 2025: In a major sanitation initiative, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) carried out an extensive Deep Clean Drive across 15 administrative wards on July 1, 2025. The operation aimed to enhance cleanliness, address public health risks, and improve overall urban aesthetics. This coordinated effort focused on removing garbage, eradicating mosquito breeding grounds, clearing illegal encroachments, and pruning overgrown trees.
The drive was led under the supervision of Sandeep Kadam, Head of the Solid Waste Management Cell, and saw the participation of 1,666 municipal employees from various departments. The results were notable, the teams collected 51,985 kilograms of debris, 17,498 kilograms of dry waste, 8,922 kilograms of wet waste, and 12,282 kilograms of garden waste.
Beyond just waste collection, the drive addressed several urban challenges. Authorities removed 33 nuisance-causing vehicles, 60 handcarts, and 20 unauthorized parked vehicles. In efforts to declutter the streetscape, 119 unauthorized banners and 180 posters were taken down, while 36.4 kilometers of tangled overhead Internet and utility cables were cleared.
The health and hygiene component of the campaign was equally robust. Officials identified and treated 186 mosquito breeding spots, sprayed insecticide at 189 locations, sanitized 215 public toilets and urinals, and cleaned 30 drinking water supply points. Tree maintenance was also part of the agenda, with 12 potentially hazardous branches pruned during the operation.
Wards like Kothrud-Bavdhan, Dhankawadi-Sahakarnagar, and Ghole Road-Shivajinagar emerged as the top contributors in terms of total waste cleared. The PMC’s integrated strategy involved close coordination between departments such as Solid Waste Management, Drainage, Pest Control, Encroachment Removal, and Garden Services, reinforcing its long-term vision of a cleaner, greener, and safer Pune.
