Pune, 18th February 2026: Following intense criticism from corporators at a general body meeting, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has acknowledged that sewage contamination has been found in the city’s drinking water supply at approximately 60–70 locations.
PMC Elected officials claimed that people in various regions are getting water that smells bad and is discolored, leading to illnesses after consumption, despite numerous complaints to local authorities. The matter was brought up in the assembly by corporators such as Gafur Pathan, Vaishali Bankar, Prashant Jagtap, and Ashwini Landge, who blamed officials for ignoring the issue.
Water supply in Pune has been compromised in several localities due to sewage mixing with drinking water, officials revealed. Nandkishor Jagtap, head of the Water Supply Department, confirmed that pipeline leakages at multiple points have allowed contamination. He assured that repair work is underway and that the Sewerage Department has allocated ₹20 crore for pipeline rectification and relocation, with a tender already issued for the project.
A departmental survey identified affected areas including Kondhwa, Hadapsar, Katraj, Shivneri Nagar, Bhagyodayanagar, Santosh Nagar, and Anjaninagar.
Officials pointed to dense population, narrow lanes, and ageing water and drainage networks as key factors. In many locations, water pipelines run beneath sewer lines, which have suffered rodent damage, enabling sewage to seep into the ground and enter the supply system.
