Pune, 30 March 2026: The halt of the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi in Pune is likely to be shifted this year, with the Alandi Devasthan set to take a final decision on April 13. The move comes after multiple concerns were raised regarding the current halt location at Bhavani Peth.
A meeting was held in Pandharpur between the Palkhi procession representatives and the Dindi Samaj organizations to discuss the issue. The two-day halt in Pune has traditionally taken place at the Palkhi Vitthal temple in Bhavani Peth, but increasing difficulties have prompted a reconsideration.
According to Palkhi Sohala chief Adv. Rajendra Umap, several challenges have been consistently reported over the years. These include inadequate space for accommodation, long queues for darshan, lack of proper sanitation facilities, shortage of drinking water, narrow roads, and severe traffic congestion. Devotees are often forced to wait in the rain due to poor arrangements.
“The current halt location in Bhavani Peth is facing serious limitations in terms of space, basic facilities, and traffic management. We are discussing all possible alternatives and will take a final decision after careful consideration, keeping the welfare of Warkaris as the top priority,” said Adv. Rajendra Umap.
Despite repeated instructions over the past three years to improve facilities, the issues remain unresolved. As a result, the Devasthan is now actively exploring alternative arrangements for the Pune halt.
Several locations in Pune are being evaluated, including school and college grounds, the SP College ground, Race Course ground, and Nehru Stadium. Authorities are also considering large-scale temporary infrastructure, similar to the German hangar setup used last year along the Palkhi route, to accommodate a large number of devotees in one place.
Officials clarified that the intention behind this move is not to hurt sentiments but to ensure better arrangements for the thousands of Warkaris who participate in the procession. Even if the onward journey halt is shifted, the possibility of halting at Bhavani Peth during the return journey remains open.
The Devasthan has sought a formal resolution copy from the Dindi Samaj organization and is evaluating all options. While some dissatisfaction may arise over the change, officials emphasized that the larger interest of devotees and society will guide the final decision.
