Pune, 23rd May 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Friday constituted a four-member inquiry committee to investigate the death of a six-year-old girl following an eye-related procedure at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital. The move comes after the child’s family alleged medical negligence and demanded strict action against those responsible.
The child died on May 18 after undergoing treatment at the private hospital. Following the incident, PMC issued a show-cause notice to the hospital on May 20 seeking an explanation regarding the treatment and circumstances surrounding the death.
The inquiry committee will be led by Dr Prashant Bothe, medical superintendent of Kamla Nehru Hospital. The panel also includes paediatricians Dr Smita Sangade and Dr Kiran Mahankale, along with anaesthetist Dr Aarti Kadam. All members are associated with Kamla Nehru Hospital.
PMC officials said the committee has been directed to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the case and submit a detailed report within seven days. The investigation will examine the medical treatment provided to the child and the sequence of events leading to her death.
In response to the civic body’s earlier notice, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital defended the treatment administered to the girl. The hospital stated that the child was suffering from a complicated pre-existing eye condition and maintained that all necessary medical protocols and procedures were followed during her treatment.
The hospital also denied allegations of negligence, saying the medical team had taken appropriate precautions while handling the case. Meanwhile, the child’s family continues to seek accountability, alleging lapses in treatment led to the tragedy.
