Standalone App Design:

  • Copilot now operates as a resizable, movable, and snappable application window, similar to other standard Windows apps. This replaces the previous static sidebar design, which was less flexible and challenging to manage.

  • The Copilot icon has been relocated to the middle of the Taskbar for easier access.

Enhanced Multitasking:

  • Users can now resize and snap the Copilot app window alongside other applications, making it more convenient for multitasking without disrupting workflows.

Improved Accessibility:

  • The update introduces a dedicated Copilot key on new Windows 11 keyboards, allowing users to launch the app with a single press.

  • For pinned apps on the Taskbar, users can invoke Copilot using the "Windows key + app position number" shortcut.

Integration with AI Features:

  • The app integrates seamlessly with plugins from popular apps like OpenTable, Shopify, and Kayak, simplifying tasks such as reservations and shopping.

  • It leverages Microsoft’s latest AI advancements, including updates to the GPT model from OpenAI.

Customisation and Control:

  • Users can now switch between the new standalone app mode and the traditional "docked" sidebar mode based on their preferences.

  • If desired, Copilot can be uninstalled directly from the Start menu.

Additional AI Features in Windows 11:

  • The update also introduces new AI-powered tools such as enhanced video editing capabilities in Clipchamp, AI-driven photo editing in Photos, and features like Snap Assist and Widgets for improved productivity.

The shift to a standalone app reflects Microsoft’s commitment to making AI more accessible and integrated into everyday workflows. By enhancing multitasking capabilities and introducing new plugins, this update positions Copilot as an essential tool for productivity and creativity.

The updated Copilot experience is part of Microsoft’s broader push toward AI-powered computing. The feature will be included in the Windows 11 2024 Update, expected to roll out in the second half of this year. Microsoft plans a phased rollout to ensure stability and gather user feedback before general availability.
